Radio Dreams
What do you want to be when you grow up, Emily? I want to do something to make a difference for kids. Then you should be a teacher. But I don't want to be a teacher. I want to be a child psychologist.
Did you become a child psychologist? No. It costs too much money to go back to school.
What did you become? I became a teacher. I found out "normal" kids had more than enough problems, so I didn't need to be a child psychologist.
Did you ever want to be anything else? I wanted to be an anthropologist so that I could understand the origins of humans and why they behave the way they do.
Did you become an anthropologist? No. As I studied it in college, I decided digging up bones was not my cup of tea.
You said you didn't want to be a teacher, so how did you become one for so long? I found it to be more rewarding than I expected. I love being around children because I am my authentic self.
Will you be a teacher until retirement? No, not exactly. I took a break from teaching to go into business.
Why did you go into business? I attended a national convention and heard motivational speakers, which mesmerized me. I wanted to be a speaker.
So, now you want to be a professional speaker? Yes, I dreamed of being one, but I have no idea what I would talk about.
Will you work to be a professional speaker? I don't think so, but who knows! I love Toastmasters International. I loved providing training and motivational presentations when I was in business.
What will you do now? I discovered a new passion, two passions! Please tell me, what are they? I am a writer and podcaster. They both give me enormous satisfaction. Being a podcaster makes me feel like I am almost a professional speaker.
You are if you say you are, Emily! Hmmm. I think my friends did not acknowledge my dedication to the craft until one day.
What day was that? Do tell! It was the day I was a guest on an international radio station. A woman named Michelle interviewed me and asked me what led me to become a writer and podcaster. As if I were totally in my element, I answered whatever she asked without hesitation. Unbeknownst to me, her professionalism led me through an organized structure of questions that brought me from how I began my writing and podcasting career to how one thing led to another, to giving examples of my content for listeners to understand how my passions grew into writing and podcasting. Moreover, it allowed me to explain how it was connected to listeners and readers because my stories related to universal themes and feelings. Sharing my journey and expressing my voice over the radio waves was a dream come true.
What's next for you, Emily? I will continue writing my stories of adversity in books and speaking each story in podcast episodes. As a kid and a teenager, I had built a strong wall like a dam that blocked me from expressing my voice. As an adult, I began expressing it with captive audiences. As a mature woman, my wall's slow or gradual dismantling began to crumble quickly. Like a dam without a wall, I wrote one story after another, gushing out my thoughts and feelings. Verbally expressing them in a podcast brought forth an ocean of emotions with lessons learned, spirits lifted, and eye-opening moments.
Do you envision anything else? I will find a way to take it to the next level to reach more readers and listeners so I can make a difference for more people by giving them hope to overcome any adversity and live a life of abundance.
Key Takeaway: Though I am not the professional speaker I dreamed of being, I was a guest on an international radio station, and I am a podcaster, so who knows what the future could hold?!
